Gerard is arguably Ireland's leading long distance endurance athlete. Last year he won the Deca UK event which comprised of 10 Ironman triathlons in ten days. In October 2018 he completed 10 Indoor Ironman triathlons in 10 days. Gerard will discuss how sport and positive mental health are closely linked and will outline how the suicide of a close family relative is the inspiration for his record breaking endurance feats.
Irish National Cross Country Champion and international athlete Kevin Dooney has spoken candidly about his own mental health. Kevin studied history at Yale University where he also ran for the cross country and track teams. Kevin will talk about his running career, his goal of reaching the Tokyo Olympics and his honesty about dealing with depression and how the death by suicide of a close friend at Yale and the suicide of Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchinson provided the motivation for him to speak about depression in an effort to help other young people.
Dublin All Ireland Winning GAA player Shane Carthy will share his own personal mental health journey and the role sport and physical activity played in it.
