MUCK by Roseanna Purcell

Maureen McLoughney celebrated her 30 th birthday the same way she’s done for the last 20 or so, a trip to Tramore with Mam and Dad. The seaside, the sandwiches and bottle of orange, the rollercoaster, the ghost train she’s now entirely too big for… The build up to this particular milestone however bursts open the dam of Maureen’s mind, her muddy thoughts spew through her chapped lips and the tidal wave of sludge she crashes the party with spoils everything, including everyone’s appetite for the birthday Swiss roll…

Maureen McLoughney is 33 today. Standing on Tramore beach watching the rollercoaster she’s excited to finally take control.

A new part time job as a deli assistant should shake things up nicely, less sweat and slog on the packaging floor at Southern Meats.

But Maureen’s thoughts won’t stop interrupting, and as she tries to get her grip on life, her mind is slipping further out of reach.

MUCK is a new play in development, which looks at how a mix of loneliness and vulnerability in modern rural Ireland can lead to toxic consequences.
